  McCulloch New Gasket Installation
Posted by: Vince Rosanelli - 03-25-2017, 12:13 PM - Forum: Restoration Advise Section Basics to Complex - Replies (5)

Hello Everyone,

I'm working on replacing the gaskets on a MC101A/A and a BDC-14 carburetor and was hoping to get a little pro advice. I've taken everything apart and cleaned the mounting surfaces and the carburetor thouroghly. I read recently about prepping the gaskets by applying or soaking them with WD-40 or oil or maybe even electronics grease in order to help prevent leaks. The thread also discussed applying a very thin coat of gasket sealer to the stuffer and manifold gaskets for added leak protection. I thought I bookmarked the thread but unfortunately I didn't, and now I cannot find it here or in the archives of the old forum.
My questions to those with experience are, what type of oil is best to use on the gaskets; mixed two cycle fuel, straight two cycle oil, Marvel Mystery Oil or some kind of electronics or silicone grease? Also, what type of gasket sealer, if any, should I use on the manifold and stuffer gaskets? Most of the new gaskets are Fel-Pro type and some of the carb gaskets are of the black, pliable felt/paper type. Lastly, I have all new gaskets except for the circuit plate gaskets; is it ok to reuse these and if so should I prep them in any way?

Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone that can offer any tips and/or advice...

hey guys,
i've posted the back up copy of the old vintage karts forum just above the general section.
just tap the title and you'll automatically go to the forum.
it's just a copy even though it looks exactly like the old forum.
as a copy it's not searchable but it has a ton of usful information. as time passes i'll be moving the best posts here so the search function can be used and posts added.

Kart Ads of the Past, Present and In-Between!
Posted by: Scott Elkes - 03-25-2017, 09:02 AM - Forum: General - No Replies

I remembered as a kid, thinking many of you as well, waiting for the NEXT issue of "Karting World" magazine! The first pass was devoted to checking out the ads to see what was new or has been updated. For the next generation of racers that would be "World Karting" magazines for the WKA members; I believe "Karter News" for the IKF Members.

Last year Bob Cole a vintage enduro road racer gave me a variety of some of the modern karting magazines--the first thing I did? Yep, the first pass was to check out the ads. Certainly noticed the changes from the days of Karting World.

A couple of months ago, I acquired some early of the early issues of "World Karting." When looking through these issues, I was able to see again, the marked differences between the publications. They are too numerous to mention--It is better, and more exciting for you, to draw your conclusions.

I'm placing a mixed bag here. I do not have "Karter News" at this time for those who may ask thus unable to include. Here goes the comparisons:

Karting World:

GoRacingMagazine, The World of Karting (Jun 2015)...
I put this together for young shifter racer friend who sold out (young family) as a memory for him. Shows a full circle for me. I raced a Russell modified Mc8 and Mc9 in 1965 and now having a Russell prepared 2012 Parolin/Honda Moto Shifter.

Fun post Names or terms about damaged motors and racing slang
Posted by: David Luciani - 03-24-2017, 04:31 PM - Forum: General - Replies (12)

O.K. Guys,

I've not been posting much lately been a little too busy. TODAY after doing a small job this i have little to do so it's goof off day. but i'm terrible at goofing off. took a hour for a power nap and it's way to early to make dinner.
So i'm starting a terribly useful thread Rolleyes for newbes and people who like trivia.
My challenge add at least two new terms in your post be it racing slang motorhead slang or something else slang worded a newbe just gotta know to understand what us old farts are talkin about!!

Here Goes:

Needled block = ( people outside two stroke have NO IDEA what the heck that is) the term needled means a block that has been visited by internal debris in the combustion chamber or sleeve. Sick usually a loose bearing or two, a ring land retainer wire , or even some carburetor inhaled debris like a small rock. The result is linear lines following the piston path the repair is weld filling the lines (uncommon) or over-boring the motor sleeve. Often a NEEDLED motor is mis-characterized as a stuck motor. That is WRONG a needled motor has far worse damage than a "stuck" motor.

Motor Sleeve (or Liner)= do motors wear shirts or something?? Nope it's the liner inside the engine made out of:

  • cast iron sleeve(reborable) a sleeve made out of cast iron either pressed into the block (foreign motors) or cast into the block (most early american two stroke motors).
  • Chrome Bore- a hard chromed surface electroplate plated into the aluminum bore area. All early two strokes without cast sleeves got this done later years it has been replaced with niasil plating.on Chrome bores it's hugely important that it's completely there no lifting or missing sections of chrome.
  • Nikasil is short for Nickel Silicon Carbide. Silicon carbide is a very hard ceramic (much harder than steel) that can be dissolved in nickel. The nickel solution can then be electroplated onto the aluminium cylinder bore.
Stuck Motor= a motor becomes "stuck" when the piston is seized or "stuck" to the cylinder wall.  if a motor is  "stuck" at the minimum the cast iron sleeve needs to be cleaned up of all stuck on aluminum piston debris with muriatic acid (carefully) or re-honed. Worse cases will require re-boring/ re-honing. plated sleeves can only be cleaned up or replaced depending on extent of damage.

Seizing = Seizing can occur during engine use, via overheating and/or lack of oil, or during storage via condensation and corrosion. Failed or insufficient lubrication usually causes the pistons or piston rings to seize to the cylinder walls through excessive friction and heat produced by the friction. Failed lubrication happens from "needleitous"  Confused a condition where a racer keeps turning in the high needle to go faster. Two strokes are  faster at the top end with less fuel  . BUT they are also oiled with the fuel/oil mix. Reducing the amount of fuel also reduces the amount of oil available and losing the race and rehoning becomes your new hobby!!!.

Honing is an abrasive machining process that produces a precision surface on a metal work piece by scrubbing an abrasive stone against it along a controlled path. Honing is primarily used to improve the geometric form of a surface, but may also improve the surface texture. (swiped from Wikipedia)

o.k. outta time gotta make dinner.
who has more?? Cool

Positive thoughts and prayers for Dick
Posted by: Chris Marchand - 03-24-2017, 11:26 AM - Forum: General - Replies (7)

Our buddy Dick Teal is down with a bad knee. He was admitted to the hospital ( Fort Myers, Fl. ) last night for exploratory surgery and to clean up an infection in the area of the knee. His knee went out last week. He is very weak and is not near a phone or e mail . I spoke to his wife Anne briefly and she is running ragged at this point,  so as I can get further info. I will post it.  Get well soon Dick !
