  Wheel repair
Posted by: Kino B. - 05-05-2022, 02:55 AM - Forum: For Sale/Wanted - Replies (5)

Hello y’all. Are there folks that can repair wheels? I have a Hands Spyder wheel that has a small portion of the lip broken off. The piece that’s broken off is about the size of an almond.

Thank you,

Kino

  Power Products AH-47 DUAL
Posted by: Terry Bentley - 04-26-2022, 06:10 PM - Forum: General - Replies (2)

Everyone has encountered this before. At least once or likely many times in your life already. I was moving some junk around when the bottom of that one heavy box let go and all the parts hit the floor. For more than 15 years I have been putting off this one project. Either deciding to just toss out the left over parts or finally set aside some time to assemble one of the many possibilities. Instead of junk laying around taking up too much space.

So this was two days ago. Actually Sunday evening. I had just finished up helping a friend modify a 951 cc engine for one of his Seadoos. It is almost ready to drop back in the hull. Hopefully before summer ends. But that one month projected time frame last fall is just a little behind schedule. Only by 7 months and still counting.....

After he left, I was moving things around and cleaning up an area when that box let go. I pushed everything in a pile still undecided what to do with the parts. It would not take much to just fill up a trash can and carry it out to the dumpster.

One reason I had put a hold on this project is still needing to find a flywheel. The AH-47 engines have a couple of weaknesses. One is the reed petals have a tendency of breaking off. The engine does not digest these too well, so you find out the engine is locked up really tight. The reed plate for some reason is not intended to be rebuilt. The petals are permanently riveted to the plate. Other used ones I have are either hanging open or missing one petal.

These are the reed plates. Most of them the petals are hanging open too far. The one I thought looked good enough to use is missing a reed petal. The plate on right has the upper right side petal missing.

I ended up choosing a new reed plate from a much later model engine that was built with a lot of AH-58 parts. The only thing different on this plate was pulse hole location had to be altered. It was a vertical shaft engine with a shorter stroke and very detuned from the original AH-58. It also did not have reed stops, which may or not make any difference when the petal decides to eventually break.

Another weakness is the flywheels are prone to cracking and splitting in two pieces. The particular engine in question managed a double trouble. Likely the reed broke, locked up the engine and caused the flywheel to split at the keyway. Or the flywheel could have been cracked all this time and I was none the wiser.

You can see the crack running from the tapered hole at the key slot all the way to outside diameter. Fortunately the shroud on these engines is fairly heavy duty and can keep the flywheel from doing any more damage than breaking in two pieces.

So two nights ago I went to the trouble to take an inventory of everything. It surprised me to find out I had already located a flywheel and tossed it in the box how many years ago?

The first night was just for separating the parts and choose the best pieces out of the lot. Then spend what seemed like forever cleaning them and making sure I had all of the correct screws, nuts and bolts.

Yesterday, I managed to assemble most of it together. The carburetor is a typical Tillotson like  used in the late 50's into the mid 60's. This engine could have either HL35, or HL-45 model. All of the ones used on most of the Power Products engines were basically the same. Most of the lower horsepower models have direct linkage for the carburetor. The larger ones have a governor to keep it from over reving and spinning the bigger chain too fast.

I prefer the gear reduction model chainsaws myself. Most of these use the larger 1/2 inch pitch chain that is hard to wear out. And getting rather hard to find.

So this morning I finished up the project and it actually fired up and runs great. Much easier to get started than some of my big Mac chainsaws.

Early this afternoon, I finished spray painting everything with a cheap HVLP gun. Just an hour ago I detailed the saw and then to final assembly. So you are seeing this saw while the paint is still drying.

So here are the pics of one finished project.

  KARTING WORLD TEST KART
Posted by: Terry Bentley - 04-25-2022, 11:21 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

Below is the cover of the December 1960 issue of KARTING WORLD MAGAZINE. Unfortunately there was nothing in this particular issue covering the test kart you see on the cover. The magazine used this kart for track testing most everything like engines, tires, brakes and other new parts at the time.

But if you wanted to find out about the kart, jump back one previous issue. The November KARTING WORLD has the article covering in detail everything you might want to know about it. Enjoy.

  HOT ROD MAGAZINE kart tests
Posted by: Terry Bentley - 04-22-2022, 12:17 AM - Forum: General - Replies (22)

From March 1960 thu October 1961 HOT ROD magazine did monthly kart tests.

If anyone is interested in seeing these posted here, let me know. There is a lot of work to scanning and cleaning up these old articles. If you want to see more of them, it would be very motivating if a whole lot of you replied.

Below is the first test.

  West Bend 580/700 pipes
Posted by: ted johnson - 04-14-2022, 08:35 AM - Forum: General - Replies (2)

Looking for two (2), preferably perfect headers for Bender 580/700 like the ones GEM and Flexo used to make. My buddy is putting his rebuilt 700 five ports on his restored '61 Fox, and likes the style of header that Dean Kanocz used on his Fox. Any help? I was thinking Vince was repopping these, but I don't see them on his site. Thanks to Dean for the photo of his Fox in his gorgeous '65 Olds F85! Thanks. Ted
PS PM or email me. Thank you.

  GEEZER FINAL RACE DAY REPORT
Posted by: Blaine Robert Young - 04-09-2022, 07:35 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

43 DEGREES, A SHARP WIND, AND OVERCAST.  OUCH!   THOSE OF US WHO TURNED 74 ON THURSDAY AND TWO DNFS ON FRIDAY, DECIDED THAT IT WAS BETTER TO SPEND A WARM DAY IN THE TRUCK WATCHING THE RACES FROM THE END OF THE STRAIGHTAWAY.

THE COLDER TEMPS MADE THE TRACK EVEN SLIPLIER THAN ON FRIDAY.  ANY TWIN THAT GOT TOO EAGER ON THE THROTTLES GOT WHEEL SPIN AND THEN KART SPIN.  MOST CLASSES HAD MULTIPLE SPINS AND TRIPS IN THE GRASS.  THE AIM OF THE MISGUIDED KARTS SEEMED BETTER THAN FRIDAY.  THERE WAS A NOTABLE ABSENCE OF THE NEED FOR RED FLAGS.

A TIP OF SMOKEY'S HAT AND AN UNOFFICIAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD GOES TO MY FAVORITE C OPEN HOTSHOE - PAPA NAGEL.  IN TWO DIFFERENT COMBINED CLASSES, HE DID A KEN MILES (THINK FORD V FERRARI).  HE JUMPED OUT (AS USUAL) TO A LARGE LEAD.   THEN HE DROPPED BACK TO RUN WITH THE SLOWER KART FROM THE OTHER CLASS.  IN THE SINGLE MAC CLASSES THEY RAN NECK AND NECK UNTIL THE FINAL TURN WHEN THE OTHER KART BROKE DOWN.  IN C & B OPEN REAR, JERRY'S FLYING 101S AND THE MUCH WEAKER 6.1S WERE VERY CLOSE AT THE FINISH.  NOW IF I CAN JUST CONVINCE MR. NAGEL NOT TO LAP ME TWO OR THREE TIMES EVERY TIME I STUMBLE INTO ONE OF HIS CLASSES, I WILL HAVE MAKE UP AN EVEN HIGHER HONOR.

MACS WERE IN UNCHARACTERISTICALLY SHORT SUPPLY FOR THIS RACE.  SEVERAL CLASSES THAT ARE USUALLY WELL REPRESENTED HAD ONLY ONE OR TWO ENTRIES.

SEAN K ESTABLISHED A TRULY BAD PRECEDENT.  HIS LADY FRIEND FINSHED HIGHER IN HER CLASS IN HER FIRST EVER KART RACE THAN SEAN DID IN HIS.  SHE DIDN'T EVEN BREAK AN ENGINE LIKE SEAN THE ENGINE DESTROYER DID IN PRACTICE.

GEEZER BARNESVILLE FIRST RACE DAY REPORT.
Posted by: Blaine Robert Young - 04-08-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

THE MORNING WAS SUNNY BUT BRISK AND CHILLY.  UNFORTUNATELY, THE SUN SLOWLY DISAPPEARED AND IT GOT A BIT COLDER.   DESPITE BOB B'S PLEA THAT THE RACE ISN'T WON ON THE FIRST LAP, THERE WERE LOTS OF TANGLES IN THE FIRST TURN AND ELSEWHERE. THE SMOOTH NEW SURFACE AND THE LOWER TRACTION ON THE COLD TRACK GENERATED A LOT MORE RED FLAGS THAN I HAVE SEEN BEFORE AT BARNESVILLE.   THERE WERE SOME CLOSE CALLS BUT FORTUNATELY IT LOOKS LIKE NO MAJOR INJURIES SO FAR.

VINCE K WAS SIDELINED WHEN HE FORGOT TO BRING THE EXTRA AXLE CLUTCHES AND PARTS HE AND I PILED UP.  I DNFD IN BOTH HEATS DUE TO LACK OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL.  TOO MUCH TIME DEVOTED TO MY MOM'S ESTATE IN OHIO AND NOT ENOUGH TO A RATHER BASIC SPORTSMAN A.

A TIP OF SMOKEY'S HAT TO MR. MAX TORQUE FOR GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY.  SEAN K BUILT A MAC FOR HIS GIRLFRIEND TO RUN IN HER FIRST KART EXPERIENCE.  IT HAD A PROBLEM THAT LEFT ME AMAZED.  JIM FIXED IT RIGHT UP AND SEAN'S LADY HAS HAD HER FIRST BARNESVILLE RIDE.

THE TURNOUT IS VERY SIMILAR TO LAST YEAR.  LAST YEAR HAD OVER 80 ENTRIES.  THIS YEAR STANDS AT 86.

IT MAY GET DOWN IN THE 30S TONIGHT WITH LITTLE HOPE OF GETTING OUT OF THE 50S TOMORROW.

  GEEZER BARNESVILLE PRACTICE DAY REPORT
Posted by: Blaine Robert Young - 04-07-2022, 07:42 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

TO NO ONE'S SURPRISE, THE BLOWHARD, INTERNET TROLL WHO KNEW WHAT BARNESVILLE NEEDED FOR IT'S SCHEDULE TO ACCOMODATE HIM - DIDN'T SHOW UP.  THE POWERS THAT BE NEED TO LEARN TO LISTEN TO THE PARTICIPANTS IN THEIR RACES NOT BE BLOWHARDS ON THE INTERNET.

PRACTICE DAY WENT WELL.  THE TRACK DRIED OUT EARLY ENOUGH THAT EVERYONE THAT WANTED PRACTICE GOT THEIR FILL.  BY 4:30 THE GRID WAS PRACTICALLY EMPTY WHEN THE DIFFERENT SESSIONS WERE CALLED OUT.

THE WEATHER STRAIGHTENED OUT THIS MORNING.  THE DAY PROVED TO BE A BLUE SKY DAY WITH THE HIGH APPROACHING 70.  THE NEXT TWO DAYS SHOULD BE DRY BUT MUCH MUCH COLDER.

  GEEZER INITIAL BARNESVILLE REPORT
Posted by: Blaine Robert Young - 04-06-2022, 06:33 PM - Forum: General - Replies (4)

As I listen to the thunder and the TV reports of local TORNADO WATCHES, 60 MPH WINDS, 2" HAIL, AND TORRENTIAL RAIN, I am reminded of a wise saying of the late Jimmy Dean.  "Dance with the one that brung you."  At last year's Barnesville ONLY 2 OF THE PARTICIPANTS agreed with the loudmouth nonparticipant's internet proposal to change the Decades old Barnesville schedule to accommodate him.  Over 80 PARTICANTS basically said, "If it's not broke don't fix it."  I pointed out that the proposed change moved the event into the spring shower and TORNADO season for Georgia.   Touchdowns of twisters have already done serious damage in Georgia this year.
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are supposed to dry up.   Temperatures are forecast to be MUCH, MUCH, LOWER THAN LAST YEAR!

Today's threatening weather made it impossible to get a sense of what the changed schedule, reconfigured track, and high travel expense will do to turnout.  Tomorrow should be more instructive in that regard.
