Ted, I wish you had a picture of one or a drawing.  Not sure I follow what you mean by the "race track shape" .

Sterling....Race Track or roundy round = Oval, horse tracks became auto racing tracks way back when at fair grounds.

Horse racing became specialized so with the early auto factories testing their cars and marketing them with racing,
the old fair ground tracks were employed .

So back to the Oval or Track......as Ted says, most of the fuel tanks used were actually more oval shaped.

Today we see square shaped tanks because they are tig welded, maybe I should say square sided .
