F/S: 6" BENDIX BRAKE ASSEMBLY - SOLD
#1
UPDATE:  ITEM SOLD

Just pulled this off the Palmini axle that came with a Fox kart I bought in Arizona.

Dirty, and outside of drum is rusty, but appears to be 100% complete and in excellent working order.

Drum hub was snug on 1" axle.  No "wobble".

Brake linings look to have lots of life left.

$125, shipping to lower 48 included.

Photos if you want 'em.  Send a PM.

All back-and-forth on PM's, not here on Forum.

My usual disclaimer applies......

Teddy,

I believe you are correct.

As it was on a '61 Fox, that makes perfect sense.

Dang, I should have asked more for the assembly.

It is already sold, however, pending receipt of payment.

Of course the brake assembly was available since I broke down the rear axle assembly yesterday.  Most all the stuff was "frozen" on the axle - except for one of the wheels.  That was my salvation.  With one wheel off, I was able to take an 18" length of 1" steel pipe, and use it as a slide hammer on the various parts.  Since it was hitting on the steel hubs of the bearings and brake hub. it broke stuff loose more or less like magic.  The opposite wheel was the hardest to get off.  This "taper lock" wheels of Bob Palmini do not like to come loose.  I had hammered away on the wheel, and took a break for dinner.  I came back out, and being the stubborn person that I am, I decided to give it one more try before retiring for the evening.  At that point I had the outer wheel half off,as well as the tire and tube.  With the axle end with nut resting on a piece of wood on the concrete garage floor, I was able to slide the the hammer down onto the steel hub from the opposite end of the axle.  It was hitting the wheel hub pretty hard that way.  About three more hits and the wheel hub came loose from the axle.  I am pleased to report that both the Palmini rear wheels are in near-perfect condition.  Now I need to get them off to Sam Bennett to get them cleaned up and ball burnished so they'll be ready for the build.

The whole Fox kart purchase and "grazing" on the "kill" by all the participants made for an interesting story, which I chronicled on the VKCA facebook page.

I was commenting on Steve Shaw's new all-aluminum Titan kart that he picked up on Saturday.

Here's what I posted:

I saw the kart this weekend when Steve dropped off my parts from a kart I bought in Mesa AZ.  The Titan is beautiful.  Minimal resto and it will be on the track.  yay for Steve.

By the way, my Fox kart from Mesa ended up "feeding" a bunch of us, and at reasonable values.  Seller delivered it from Mesa to Teddy Johnson in Arizona City.  Cubel came by Teddy's and took a look and bought the frame with satellite seat, steering and engine.  And he did the disassembly AND delivered my parts to the Kanocz's in Tucson.  Whereupon Dean bought the 4" front Hands wheels and the steering wheel - and delivered the rear axle assembly and Palmini tank to Santa Maria.  I had to miss Santa Maria, but Steve Shaw put the tank on sale for me, whereupon Pruit Ginsberg bought the tank.  Steve then dropped off the rear axle assembly and tank cap ( actually a brake cap) here in Livermore on his way home from picking up the Titan.

I probably could have sold everything for much more on eBay, but it was more fun "feeding" all my karting buds, and watching this whole thing play out.  Now I have a perfect set of Palmini rear wheels, taper lock axle and a perfect 2nd generation Palmini sprocket hub.  Everybody got a good deal and helped each other out.  Life doesn't get any better!

I wondered who got the Titan ? Saw it on CL and made an offer to the lady selling it .

It was a steal of a deal, although the Titan is an aluminum kart....it has the CT Alloy components that make it
special as a historical vintage machine.

Jimmy looked like it had a low in the frame Palmini tank......and intact vintage wheels, asking price $100 for the whole thing !

Glad it wasn't purchased to become a yardy !

Steve,

Ah, the poor ill-fated Titan! I remember when the Titan "team" introduced the aluminum tube Titan Karts at the Rolling Stoneman Kart Track in Pittsburg, California. It wasn't too long until they were referred to as the "double row bath tub". They weren't long-lived, as they lacked a bit in the handling department, and quickly started to break apart. Chances of finding any survivors would be difficult to say the least, but one never knows! It took me five years to find a Hovey, and I was actively searching constantly. It would be cool to find a Titan intact, as there were very few produced. The Titans I remember were raced at Pittsburg, Livermore, and Petaluma. Maybe you could find one in a barn in one of those towns. Good luck finding one!!

Does anybody know what became of Chuck Trantham, the C.T. in C.I. Alloy? He used to run the Titans in early endures in CA. TJ

Steve Shaw got the Titan.

It is beautiful.

It does have a short cylindrical Palmini tank low just behind the seat.
