Today I had and axle I needed and it had been laying on the shelf for a few years. Nice shape but had a key in one area. Turns out it would not come out with the normal methods like lifting it with a good side cutter or chasing the axle keyway with a small chisel. I took my 4 1/2" angle head with thin cutoff blade and ran the length of the key. After several gental passes I was 2/3 of the way through the key which was about 4" long, and it actually fell out when the side pressure was realeased. Super easy. By the way I was striking that small chisel with a 3 1/2 # hammer and it never moved.
