How I got started....
#4
Thanks for that reply Steve. One of the stories told about the Dad that I had never heard....
Seems as though he was on the way home after a weekend race out of town. On a Texas farm to market road. He ran out of gas. The kart was in the back of the pickup and there was not much traffic on a Sunday evening late. So he got the kart out gassed it up and with a spare fuel can took off back down the highway to the last small town he had come through. He made it to the town and the first station he came to he stopped and got the can filled. He had just started back to the truck and was just outside the small town when he ran into a State Trooper. Now he was going wide open when the Trooper passed him going the other way.... and he looked back over his shoulder and sure enough the DPS car was turning around and had the lights on. You would have to have known Papa Joe to appreciate this, knowing he was caught he just pulled it over and killed the motor. The Trooper comes flying back down the road and sees him just sitting there waiting, pulls over and gets out of the car looking at the kart and shaking his head. Now I suppose you've got some kind of story he says, still eyeballing the kart. Well Papa Joe has this silly grin on his face and tells him what happened, says " I'm late getting home and I could have walked back to town but I was afraid if I left this kart in the back of the truck, well it wouldn't be there when I got back."  "So I took it with me."  Well the Trooper had to think about that one, asked him about the kart and the races and told the Dad to start it back up and follow him, and gave him an escort back to the pickup. Stopped and helped him load it back up and told him to be careful on the way home. Thank God for those pull start Mac's... back in the Day.

The Preacher who did the memorial service for Papa Joe related this story to us at his funeral. Only Papa Joe could have pulled that off.....
