MCCulloch Rebuild
#1
Photo
Hello
New to the forum and looking for recommendations on having
a McCulloch engine rebuilt. It’s a MC-101 B. Former owner said they stopped
Using it because it was too difficult to keep running. Looks like it has not been run in many years.
       Thanks, Ed Burke

Hi Ed,
I see you are out in Mass. What do you want to use this engine for/ The 1st thing I see is it has a 3/4" dia. crank. The best Mac builder out your way and a good guy is Scott Kneisel.

I second the Scott Kneisel motion. If you want to have an engine that can use better clutches, find the Mac tapered crank. Maybe Scott can help. Failing that, Terry Ives. TJ

I want to put it on a kart. I picked the engine up with a MCCulloch R1 kart. I know these Mac engines are sought after by chain saw guys.  Also looking for recommendations on blasting or dipping the frame. Any recommendations? I’ll contact Scott on the engine. Appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Ed

Blasting is cheaper, faster and safer. Powder coating is far more durable than paint. The color called RAL 1023 is fairly close to Mac yellow. in paint, Rustoleum Sunburst Yellow is close. I believe there is a missing bar across the back of the engine mounts in the kart you showed. I may be wrong. TJ

Any idea what it would cost to sand blast, fix rusted areas, and powder coat? The floor pan is solid, but scratched up on the bottom, with some significant rust on right frame. Would replacing the original pan take away from the value ?

The prices totally depend on where you are and who you take the frame to. A lot of powder coaters will media blast the old paint off for you. If you replace the pan properly, who's going to know? These things are not classic cars, but mass produced race karts. The value won't change if you do the repairs correctly. Remember, the kart is never going to be worth all that much. It's just a kart, though a decent machine. They were well made, though heavy and relatively inflexible. If you're thinking of value as a restored kart, the 101B is years too new to be proper on an '61 or '62 R1, though it'll make a fun ride. Properly a pair of Mc6's or Mc20's would be the best bet as far as value is concerned. TJ

You can go with the 3/4" crank and the smallest gear you can put on it will be a 10 tooth which is fine because you can make your changes on the rear sprocket.

Received a quote of between 1300-1600 to blast, fix areas on the frame, gas tank and powder coat. The fellow that powder coats sent pictures to a motorcycle fab guy who estimated frame repair. I don’t know if that would include the floor pan or not. Maybe I could trade the Mc 101b for a couple of period correct motors. I’m itching to get going on this but had rotator cuff surgery last week and that’s going to slow me down for awhile. I appreciate the feedback. Ed

If the price includes welding up and grinding down the bad areas of tubing, and replacing that rear bumper bar across the back of the engine mounts, maybe it would be O.K. If he's going to use body filler or lab Metal, NO! Anyhow, $1300+ sounds awful high to this old buzzard. Finding two period correct Macs to trade for the 101 is going to be a chore. The Mc6's or Mc20's are not growing on trees, and the guys who have them will want some dough for them. Until you know exactly what is going on inside the 101, you can't give an honest description. I think you need to PM Scott Kneisel and see what he's got going on the early engines. He might know someone who's got a couple of them. Of course, the kart is perfectly proper with a single Mac on it, and it would still be fun to drive that way. It is just that the R1 always benefitted from the extra push of twin engines. TJ
