you have to thread the nipple to accept a fuel cut of valve. 
these nipples often crack so you need to glue a metal sleeve to the outside that fits tight.
in the past i've use a pex brass fitting for plumbing as the sleeve. you need to get the 1/2" MALE FITTING it's made to slip into a female copper fitting. the technical term is street fitting. 
cut off the pex side and the i.d. of the copper sweat side will fit tightly against the plastic nipple.
it'll look like this one not sure this one has proper i.d. they run about six bux in plumbing supply house
