BUSHNELL GEEZER REPORT SATURDAY THIRD RACE

THE WEATHER GODS WERE STILL ANGRY AT THE ABSENCE OF BUTCH K AND GARY W.  A THREAT OF RAIN HAD DEVELOPED FOR THE AFTERNOON SO THE RACES STARTED AT 11AM.  THE BEST NEWS OF THE DAY WAS THAT BOTH "ROOKIES" (BOTH A BIT OLDER AND GRAYER THAN THE KIDS RUNNING AROUND WITH STOCK MC49S AND SHORTENED KARTS IN THE EARLY 70S) FINISHED IN THE MONEY.  THE HISTORIC DRIVER WON HISTORIC.  THE REAR 8.1 DRIVER WITH THE PLAIN JANE 820 RIG WAS THIRD IN THE SECOND HEAT AND SECOND IN THE THIRD HEAT FOR THIRD OVERALL (AND A NICE ROUND OF APPLAUSE WHEN HE GOT HIS AWARD).

AMONG THE UNUSUAL EVENTS, THE NEGEL BENDER C MACHINE BROKE DOWN IN TWO OF THREE HEATS.  IN 6.1 REAR THERE WAS ONLY ONE KART THAT FINISHED THE THIRD HEAT.   THE 8.1 AMERICAN SIDEWINDERS GOT PASSED BY MOST OF THE 6.1 AMERICAN SIDEWINDERS AND ALL BUT ONE 8.1 EVENTUALLY RETIRED FROM THE FIELD OVER THE 3 HEATS.   IN THE THIRD SIDEWINDER FOREIGN RACE ONE RACER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE SPARKPLUG BOOT AND DROVE THE WHOLE RACE WITH ONE ARM HOLDING THE BOOT ON THE SPARKPLUG AND ONLY THE LEFT HAND ON THE STEERING WHEEL.   FORTUNATELY, NO HARM CAME OF IT AND IT DID MAKE FOR INTERESTING WATCHING.

THE MOST UNSURPRISING OUTCOME OF THE EVENT WAS THAT PAPA SMURF (AKA NEGEL) WON +60, REAR 6.1, AND, OF COURSE, C OPEN CLASSES.   HIS OFFSPRING DID WELL BUT DIDN'T COME CLOSE TO HIS SWEEP.

THE ONLY MAJOR INJURIES WERE TO ENGINES, OTHER KART PARTS. AND ASSOCIATED WALLETS.   THE SOUND OF STUCK PISTONS AND THE SUDDEN LACK OF ANY SOUND CONTRIBUTED TO THE USUAL ATTRITION FROM HEAT 1 TO HEAT 3.
