GEEZER BUSHNELL DAY 3 - RACE CONCLUSION REPORT

FLASH!!  SMOKEY REPORTED FAKE NEWS IN DAY 2 REPORT.  I ACTUALLY FINISHED THIRD IN RACE NUMBER 2.  THE ULTIMATE WINNER IN ALL THREE SPORTSMAN'S HEATS WAS SO FAST THAT HE WAS RACING WITH THE REAR 6.1S THAT STARTED AHEAD OF US.  WHEN HE FLEW BY WITH THE 6.1S (THINK A OPEN FOR THOSE WITH LONG MEMORIES) I THOUGHT HE WAS PART OF THAT PACK.  RUNNING WITH A BUNCH OF DUAL CARB, PIPE, ETC. MACS WITH JUST A SLOPER SINGLE CARB AND A HORSTMAN CAN MUFFLER WAS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.  YES, THE GUY WAS SKINNY, BUT THAT ENGINE WAS STRONG.  THE DUDE COULD REALLY DRIVE TOO.

SATURDAY MORNING PROVED TO BE QUITE NICE.  THE SUN CAME OUT, THE WIND DIED DOWN, AND THE TEMP WAS ABOUT RIGHT.  THE RACES STARTED SHORTLY AFTER 9:30 AM (OUCH).  THE FINAL LEG OF MY "AKERMAN" EXPERIMENT WENT BETTER WITH MORE SPEED SO THE REST OF THE FIELD TOOK LONGER TO BLOW MY DOORS OFF. 

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOOKED AT JIM ACKERMAN'S ARTICLES ON USING CIRCLE CRANKS IN MACS OR BENDERS, YOU ARE AWARE THAT HE RECOMMENDED DRILLING A HOLE IN THE SMALL WELCH PLUG FOR RUNNING WITH A TUNED PIPE.   HE SAID IT WAS UNNECESSARY FOR USE WITH A MUFFLER.  I HAD PICKED UP A COUPLE OF THE DRILLED CARBS WITH AN ENGINE I BOUGHT SO I HAD TO TRY ONE OUT. JIM SHOULD HAVE SAID IT'S NOT FEASIBLE FOR A SIMPLE MUFFLER.   THE CARB WAS STILL EXTREMELY RICH WITH THE LOWER JET TURNED COMPLETELY OFF.   WHEN IT CAME TIME TO RUN THE GAS & OIL CLEANOUT, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING (BUT IT CERTAINLY GOT A GOOD FLUSHING OUT).

DESPITE ENGINE TROUBLE IN THE FIRST RACE, BUTCH K. SCORED THE SILVER MEDAL (REALLY) IN +60.  SECOND PLACE IN A DECENT SIZE FIELD IS IMPRESSIVE WHEN ROUND 1 WAS A PROBLEM.  UNFORTUNATELY SON VINCE HAD MORE PAIN TODAY THAN ON FRIDAY AND PASSED ON GETTING BEAT UP FOR 8 LAPS (AT 2/3 MILE PER LAP).

THE NEW 4 STOKE CLASSES ATTRACTED SOME ENTRANTS.  THE MODIFIED CLASS HAD THREE KARTS WHICH SEEMED TO ME TO BE GOOD FOR SOMETHING THAT JUST STARTED.  THE BRIGGS DON'T HAVE THAT GREAT WHINING ROAR THAT THE VINTAGE TWO STROKES HAVE.  MY IMPRESSION WAS THAT (AS IN DAYS GONE BY) THE FOUR STROKES CAN'T KEEP UP WITH ANY DECENT RUNNING MAC.

OVERALL, I THINK THE EVENT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS.  THERE WERE MORE ENTRANTS THIS YEAR.  THE WEATHER WAS TOLERABLE TO GOOD (SUNDAY IS SUPPOSED TO PRODUCE GULLY WASHER STORMS).  I'M NOT AWARE OF ANY MAJOR DUSTUPS (BUT I COULD HAVE MISSED SOME).  FINALLY, THINGS WERE GENERALLY ON TIME DESPITE THE CHANGES FOR THE WEATHER THREAT.
