BELATED BARNESVILLE GEEZER RACE DAY TWO REPORT
#1
3/18

BARNESVILLE DODGED THE RAIN BULLETS THAT FELL AROUND IT ON SATURDAY MORNING.  THE KART SHOW AND COMPLETION OF 2ND HEATS TOOK PLACE IN THE MORNING.   THE THIRD HEATS RAN IN THE AFTERNOON.

BUTCH K. AND HIS PROGENY ALL SCORED AWARDS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CLASSES.  SEAN K WON B OPEN (OK HE WAS THE ONLY ENTRY) AND ACTUALLY RAN WITH THE NAGEL C OPENS UNTIL ONE OF THE MC92S COMPLETELY DESTROYED ITSELF AT THE END OF THE LONG STRAIGHTAWAY.  GARY W. AND DADDY VINCE BOTH WERE SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR OVER THE B OPEN EFFORT (GARY HAS TO BUY ANOTHER MOTOR AND SAID IT DOESN'T MATTER - THAT'S REALLY PLEASED WITH THE EFFORT).

BUTCH K. SCORED SECOND IN A CLASS OF 10 OVER 60S.  VINCE K. SCORED THIRD IN WHAT SEEMED LIKE AN INFINATELY LARGE MODIFIED YAMAHA CLASS WHILE RUNNING A STOCK ENGINE.

SMOKEY SCORED THE LARGEST NUMBER OF POINTS IN HIS FALLBACK CLASS OF SPORTSMAN REAR.   BEFORE THIS BECAME "VINTAGE" THE GOAL WAS TO SCORE THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF POINTS.  THE SAME THING WAS TRUE WHEN I WENT TO SCHOOL.  YOU TRIED TO GET THE HIGHEST SCORE TO SHOW YOU WERE A GOOD STUDENT.  THE PC POLICE HAVE NOW INVADED EVEN VINTAGE KARTING.  TO AVOID HURTING THE FEELINGS OF THOSE HAVING A BAD RACE DAY, YOU NOW GET MORE POINTS THE WORSE YOU DO.  WITH THREE DID NOT STARTS, SMOKEY OUTPOINTED ALL HIS UNDERPERFORMING COMPETITORS WHO THOUGHT THEY NEEDED TO BE OUT FRONT TO DO WELL.

A NOTE ON ATTRITION.   ONE OF THE KEYS TO VINTAGE KARTING HAS ALWAYS TO SURVIVE THREE HEATS.  IN OVER 60, THE CLASS STARTED WITH 10 ENTRIES AND TWO KARTS WERE RUNNING AT THE END OF THE THIRD HEAT.  IN THE FIRST HEAT FOR ONE OF THE FOUR CYCLE CLASSES, 12 KARTS STARTED AND ONLY EIGHT FINISHED!  IT APPEARS SOME THINGS REALLY HAVEN'T CHANGED MUCH WITH MODERN KARTING (EXCEPT SLOWER SPEEDS AND MUCH QUIETER MOTORS).   THE THUNDER AND LIGHTNING CLASS (DUAL SIDEWINDER) BUCKED THE BREAKDOWN TREND.  SIX KARTS STARTED THE FIRST HEAT AND ONE DROPPED OUT QUICKLY.  THE OTHER FIVE BOOMERS RAN ALL THREE HEATS AND FINISHED THEM ALL.

ATTENDANCE - THIS YEAR HAD AROUND 60 OR 70 MORE KARTS THAN LAST YEAR.  AROUND HALF WERE PROBABLY THE FOUR STROKES.   THE FACILITY WAS PRETTY PACKED WITH 145 TO 150 ENTRIES.  IT'S HARD TO IMAGINE WHAT IT WAS LIKE THE YEAR (BACK WHEN) THAT OVER 600 ENTRIES SHOWED UP.

JIMMY'S CLONE - EVERYONE CAN WATCH THE ENTIRE TRACK AND DON'T NEED YOUR OFTEN INACCURATE PLAY BY PLAY.  A NUMBER OF CLASSES WERE RUN TOGETHER.  TO SAY THAT THE STRAIGHT AXLE SIDEWINDER AND THE LEADING REAR 6.1 ARE RUNNING FIRST AND SECOND IS A BIT SILLY (THEY ARE ACTUALLY BOTH FIRST IN THEIR CLASS).   SORRY, BUT IN MY OPINION YOUR VOICE IS LIKE THE OLD FINGERNAILS ON THE CHAULKBOARD SOUND.

SCHEDULING - STARTING THE FIRST HEATS OVER 2 1/2 HOURS LATE WAS UNFORGIVABLE.   WITH ALL MORNING AND THE LUNCH BREAK TO SORT OUT SCHEDULE PROBLEMS (for 4 or 5 double entries) WHY DID YOU NEED OVER 2 1/2 HOURS OF QUIET TIME (MORE PRACTICE OR PLAY TIME WOULD HAVE MADE MUCH HAPPIER PARTICIPANTS).  SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN WHEN THE MOTORS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RIPPING.

OVERINDULGENCE REDUCTION - BUTCH K AND I BROUGHT SOME KARTS TO SELL TO REDUCE THE SIZE OF OUR CONSIDERABLE FLEETS.  I JUMPED INTO AN EARLY LEAD WITH THE SALE OF A MARGAY CHEETAH FRAME.  THIS RARE INSTANCE OF LEADING BUTCH FELL APART WHEN I WAS ALERTED THE SOMEWHAT SKELETAL REMAINS OF A MIELKE SIDEWINDER WAS ON THE PREMISES.  THE GODFATHER GARY W MADE ME AN OFFER I COULDN'T REFUSE AND I FELL BACK INTO A TIE WITH BUTCH.  LATER A DEAL CAME UP ON A MEYERS LANCER SINGLE SIDEWINDER WHICH ELEVATED BUTCH TO THE WIN WITH A 0 TO -1 SCORE.   THIS IS A LESSON INTO THE DANGERS OF LETTING PEOPLE KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN.   FRIENDS FOUND TWO KARTS AND A B-BOMB THAT I REALLY SHOULD HAVE LIVED WITHOUT THAT ARE IN MY OVERLY LARGE TROVE OF GOODIES.
