Hello All,
I'm looking for some help regarding a recoil starter spring for a Mac49.  Does anyone happen to have a picture of what a correctly installed spring looks like?
Appreciate any help.
Thanks
never bothered messing with one though i suppose they are easy to suss out.
if you need a new recoil i have a fair pile if them lying around.

spring part number 51665, outer loop is directional.
Thanks guys. That is the correct spring I just am having a hard time getting it installed correctly.
why did you remove it?
typically i avoid removing those springs as things can get very exiting when you try to re-install them.
i assumed you know how to do this but just in case.
do not bother to have to pull start handle on the pull string.
you'll never get it to retract tight.
wind spring up install and put pull pully into place with the loose string wrapped tightly around pully.
install nut or retainer screw.
AFTER everything else is installed you'll want to pull the pull string out and connect pull handle.
often you'd want to wind the spring a few turns past (tighter) to preload it i don't recall if that part is done on a mcculloch.
then you fish the end out and secure to the pull handle.
by doing this the string will wind tight onto pully.
if you didn't wind it tight enough to start you'll get some slack leaving the pull handle hanging. only fix is to redo whole process.
working blind here hope that helped.
if it didn't tell us what you've already done and exactly what problem you've encountered.
or be lazy and get another one that's assembled.
d Cool
Thanks for the information Dave. The recoil quit retracting and when I took it apart I found the spring was broken, about the last 2 inches of the spring snapped off. I can get the new spring in fine, it's just how it attaches that has me somewhat baffled. There is a bend in the spring as the picture that Mark attached. I cant seem to get it to catch and stay on "pulley shaft" I was hoping to find a picture of one in place to see how the bend is once attached.
Did you figure it out?

Hey Terry, I never did really find a picture of an installed spring and honestly haven't messed with it any more.
I don't have any pictures of the inside of a McCulloch recoil mechanism, but, as I recall, even the recoil on my Super 55A saw isn't all that unique, as far as the spring replacement was concerned. That said: Would the local power equipment dealer in your area be able to fix it for you? I LOVE doing my own work, but sometimes it's worth paying someone else to do a certain job here or there.

This just occurred to me: There is a McCulloch technical bulletin about recoil mechanisms. It's bulletin K128. I pulled it off of the McCulloch IPL page in the Library over on rearenginekarts.com
