Dick Flores (hope I spelled that correctly) frequently runs one of these out on the West coast on his Bug in direct drive configuration of course. It's plenty fast and I've always wanted to know the story behind the gear reduction so a big thanks to Scott for posting this!
If I had to guess I'd say that the power loss of the gear reduction is about equal to to the reduced power loss on the drive sprocket due to the larger diameter.
These are still made today but without the gear reduction.
