DURING THE TRANSITION FROM "BOX MUFFLERS" - GEM, REED, HORSTMAN, OPEN HEADERS, ETC. TO PIPES GEM MADE A PRODUCT THEY CALLED THE QUIET ONE. IT HAD A HEADER, A LONG FLEX HOSE, AND A SORT OF OBLONG MUFFLER WITH ONE OUTLET. IT WAS MUCH QUIETER THAN THE BOX MUFFLERS AND WAS QUIETER THAN THE PIPES WITH NO BAFFLES. IT WAS ALSO PRETTY PRICEY AND DIDN'T SEEM COMPETITIVE WITH THE PIPES. THE QUIET ONE AND ITS' KNOWOFFS ARE FAIRLY RARE TODAY.
MY QUESTION IS ABOUT WHAT CLASSES SOMEONE WHO SHOWED UP WITH THIS TYPE OF MUFFLER WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN IN. IT'S NOT EXACTLY A "BOX" BUT IT'S NOT REALLY A PIPE. THIS QUESTION WON'T COME UP VERY OFTEN, BUT I THINK IT'S WORTH THINKING ABOUT IN AVANCE.

yeah pretty rare but still out there,,,it would run with box mufflers IMO....
has very little if any tuning advantage,,,,

quiet ones are same era as box mulfflers
so they should run with box mufflers as they ain't all that anyway.
but they're neat to look at!

A friend of mine tried one on his Sportsman Sidewinder a couple of years ago and it actually slowed him down from from his Gem box muffler. I don't know if these were an advantage back in the day? Also how much flex do you run or does it matter?

Back in the day it was claimed the "Quiet One" was faster than a box muff or open header. I certainly could see no increase. We experimented with flex and that helped, but my open Macs were just as fast with the open exhaust. Ted
