  Tri Flow
Posted by: ted johnson - 03-03-2017, 12:41 PM - Forum: General - Replies (7)

I use only Tri Flow on my chains. Usually, it's no issue, as I clean the kart within a couple of days after an event. However, due to my illness last year, I didn't get the kart cleaned after the March Tucson event. The Tri Flow has hardened wherever the chain has flung it. Citrus based cleaners just bounce off, and I don't dare use petroleum products on the powder coat. Denatured alky does work, but S-L-O-W-L-Y and with lots of rubbing, and I'm not too good yet at standing for long periods of time. After over an hour, I have most of it off the seat back, but the encrustation around my Heim joint swing mount link to the X member, the engine fins and such like is a real hassle. The alcohol seems to remove the dried castor O.K., but the Tri Flow is another matter. Anybody got thoughts about a cleaning method that won't harm the powder coat? Thanks. Ted

Where do you find the crinkle paint?
Posted by: Blaine Krugerud - 03-02-2017, 06:04 PM - Forum: General - Replies (11)

Hello guys,

I have an MC91A that is in the midst of restoration but I ran into a problem: Where do you find the black crinkle paint to paint the cover? I thought that we had a link that info on the old site but that doesn't do me any good now. Could one of you engine builders help me out on that? Thanks in advance!

Blaine

  Pete Williams
Posted by: Jim Thompson - 03-02-2017, 01:38 PM - Forum: General - Replies (13)

Many of you have had the pleasure of racing, sharing a beer, and swapping stories with my dad (Pete Williams) over the past several years. I'm sorry to report he's currently in the shop for a major tune-up. We're keeping people update on this website:
https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/petewilliams

I'm certain he'd appreciate a note or two from the vintage karting crew.

  820 stroker
Posted by: Art Romanelli - 03-02-2017, 12:18 AM - Forum: West Bend Engines , Chryseler , U.S. Motors - Replies (8)

So I just acquired most of my stroker parts for a 820 project and my question is , has anyone run a stroker 820 with luck or do they have a weak life expectancy? I imagine the latter , but was just curious how successful one of these beasts can be and what to do to enjoy it for a reasonable amount of time. I have a Hortsman head , thin ring Wiseco ,fancy dancy rod bolts and newer rod, etc. Girdle or no girdle? I talk to a couple gurus a lil , but would like to start a dialogue for others to see. Thanks

Turning the stub shaft saw crank for 9 tooth inboard
Posted by: steve welte - 03-01-2017, 09:05 PM - Forum: Mcculloch Engines - No Replies

This is how I make the stub shaft 250 saw crank for inboard 9 tooth use. I take the 5/8" shaft and grind it down to 9/16" using the tool I made here. I made a tool holder for my dremel tool to be used on the lathe. I first use the 60 grit roll cartridge for roughing the shaft. It takes about 3 cartridges to get the shaft to within about .010 of the finish size of .960. At that point I switch over to the stacked cut off wheels because they are harder and grind more consistent. Then I finish the shaft with some 320 wet paper. Max torque makes a clutch for this setup for the mac 49 class. The cranks you can get for $20.00 or so in the chainsaw part of E bay. In the midwest we have about 20 of these running and have raced them for the last 5 years. Only 2 failures have been seen. One the threads broke off because the clutch wasn't seated against the crank stub. The other a guy broke the end off because he forgot it was left hand thread. We've won a ton of races using this cheap crank. It takes about 1/2 hour to grind it down. good luck.

a good machinist has a better way to do this but i have few resources available and it has worked perfect.
