Full Version: Chrome Plating Magnesium

Hi All,
I saw this on a BAT kart and wonder how it was done and who may have had this done.
This Mc6 fan cover and recoil appear to be chrome plated.
Is it electroplate or maybe spray chrome?

I was always told that Magnesium alloy on these covers could not be chrome plated.
Anybody have suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

I've seen some powdercoat chrome that looks like the genuine article. Maybe that's what they did?

I think Eastwood sells everything you need to do it, other than an oven to bake it on with.
Scott,
this might help your understanding.

Interesting, now I need to find someone who does electroless nickel.

My friends at Kaehr Coatings in Albuquerque do it. They do all my anodizing, anodize stripping, zinc coating and powder coat. I have had a number of stainless parts electropolished, including the back bumper on my old Swoopster. They're suppliers to most of the industries in ABQ, as well as servicing Sandia National Laboratories for all their nuclear and satellite applications. I don't know what the deal is on electroless nickel on magnesium, but these are good people, and I'd give 'em a call. You can mail or UPS parts to them, they'll do them and send them back. They DO not chrome plate there. You know what the EPA is! Ted

is it possible that it was sanded, polished and then clear coated?

I have tried that John and it comes out looking OK but not quite close enough to be mistaken for chrome. It does work though and if a good two part urethane clear is used it also lasts well.
