I seem to remember a Cates with dual (I believe) Mc7's winning a dual class at one of the National events, many eons ago. Does anyone remember when and who he was? Thanks. Ted
Heck Ted, you can recall Cain and Able's little sister.  Your memory surpasses 90% of the people looking at this site. Stay healthy I hope to dropping by in January with Frank to have our annual chat.  This will be the first time Frank has gotten off his island to venture into public.  He took up cattle ranching over in Ireland and has become quite the cowboy.  He just sent me a video on sheep rustlers that they are having a problem with over in Ireland.
Jim, I shall be happy to see both you and our good Frank. I can just see him astride a TALL horse! The only reason I remember that kart is because Charlie has a box full of old magazines, and that picture was in one of the dozens of mags. Those old magazines were where I found the little tiny black and white pix from which I conjured up the n1ke kart. I guess Frank and I are related in that respect. He builds karts from photos. Ted
Are you talking like back in 1962?
Terry, I don't remember, but the time frame would be fairly close. I can't remember which of Charlie's magazines I saw it in, years ago. Ted
A Cates kart set the overall track record at the 1961 Nationals in Mansfield. But I dont recall who was driving. I was only about 4 months old, so my memory was not all that focused at the time. That would have also been before the Mc 7's were out.

George Bailey won a class in 1963 at the Enduro Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. But I think he was running Westbend 820's.

Chuck Powell won a class on a Cates there too. But was running a single Mc7 in A-Light modified.
He also set a seniors singles class track record in Rockford at the nationals.
For some reason, the name Lanny comes to mind. TJ
Lanny Young, Cates dual Texas Mc-20's. I bought a pair of Texas Mc-20's with a Cates from Sandy Shepard.
Thanks, Tom! Lanny's name had stuck in my mind after all these years, but I wasn't sure. His rig as I remember, was a neat and clean piece. My pal Charlie, has tons of mags going back to '59/'60, but he's in Wisconsin, so I can't get at them. We were from Florida back then, so we didn't get to meet a lot of the Western karters. Happy New Year. Ted
Lanny Young from Houston Texas is who set the overall track record on that Cates with Mc 20's at the 1961 Nationals on the Dart Speedway..

The existing overall track record was set a few weeks earlier on a B-Super kart at 36.19 seconds.

During the Nationals the track record in every class was broken. Several as the time trials were being made one driver after another.

Chuck Balsiger was driving the KART Magazine Special in C Super powered by a 250cc Yamaha. He broke the overall track record first with a time of 35.99 seconds. He would be competing against Don Surwalls Max-Torque Special, Duffys Go-Kart 800 triple, and Ken Burderns triple Lancer.

So that all took place on Friday. But Saturday the B-Super class was up for their time trials. This is when Lanny Young managed a lap time of 35.19 seconds, now breaking all previous records from the day before and overall record set just three weeks earlier.

So now you know.
