For those of you that don't look at Facebook, you are missing out.  Scott Elkes has been posting many of the old copies of karting publications.  His most recent one is the November 1969 issue of Modern Karting.  There is a very interesting and informative article on pages 24 - 28 written by Jim Akkerman tilted Jim Akkerman Bends 24 Horses Out Of A Bender".   This article is very detailed and has many good photos illustrating the work.

The Akerman bender was really stout.  A fellow built one that he ran at mid Ohio.  It was competitive with most of the B-bombs that were coming on the scene.
