Hello,
I am putting together a chaparral that was run at the 1968 grand nationals in Batavia NY.
What clutch and exhaust would most likely been used for a B-open kart at this time ?
  thanks Shawn

Hello Shawn,

Here are some photos of the B Open Class at that race. Won by Roy Fleming.  As discussed, pipes or can mufflers may have been open. I have seen piped B open and Can type exhausts on B Open.

Three or four of the the legends that ran then (That Class !) are still karting today !

Any additional info on this class run in 1968 ?
Well there ya go. Just saw 3 of those people at Barnsville. Shouldn't be to hard to get an exact answer.
I can blame(??) Roy for getting me back into karting in 67-68......got me hooked up with Big J and crew...was never good enough to be on the "team" but they sure knew how to build a kart....started out in A Open light,,only the most competitive class going at the time...just as K88s, oil clutches , slippy pipes came in...

wonder what ever happened to him????Lived in Norwalk Ohio for many years , moved to Grand Rapids MI...then lost touch.???

Romero,
thanks for all the info here and what you sent me via email. Great talking to you last night.
Gary,
I assume Roy ran B open with pipes, but would like varification if possible. Do you remember any details on what he ran that year or his preference for pipe, clutch, carb setup, or even what was available that year?
I know that is asking allot of your memory. Any help with details would be greatly appreciated.
was it you that told me Roy's dad worked for Jasper?
There are a few Jasper sticker on the kart.
Thanks

Shawn,,rather than try and go from memory, ans get blasted by 20 people on here for being wrong............

what I would do is build it the way you want it,,,most in 68 would have had dry clutches, can mufflers, dual carbs, alky....I believe in 67-68 was some of the first Foreign motors that would have had oil clutches and pipes,,,,the next few years ..all that changed ..drastically....Macs were still running, and competitively ,,,but not like in the late 60s..

and yes,,,his father did work for Jasper and I believe was later on the IKF board, maybe even Pres??????

nothing more fun than a good set of Macs on Vintage tires tearing up the asphalt....

let all the corrections begin............................sigh

Shawn it depends on what your doing with the kart also. If your trying to make it period correct to show then you will want to fine the period correct parts which could include the correct pipes for that year. If you plan on running it in todays B class then it's box mufflers and dry clutch.
