Hi, all!

This is my first post here on vintagekartforum, but I've been acquiring parts from a variety of sellers and sources, in order to restore my Rupp Grand Prix, for a long time. I had initially decided to use an Ackerman housing and oil bath clutch on its Margay gearbox, but now that I am actually beginning to assemble the parts into a kart again, I realize that I want to use a MaxTorque dry clutch. I know that I can get a brand new one, but I have been advised to seek out a vintage spring-dampened drum.

Does anyone have a drum like this for sale?

It will be for a MC 90, if that makes a difference.

The standard Margay un-spring-dampened clutch drum works just fine. My pal, Charlie Craibe, has been using dry Max Torques on his very early Margay gearbox since he got it in the early sixties. It has had 10+ cube West bends, Mac supers and 101's, and a Bonbright 610 over the years and it has always run very well with the standard drum. Here's a pic from the mid-sixties with the huge 820, and as it appears now with a 101D. Same drum! TJ

i am not an expert on gear boxes or on the clutches but i have 10 and run them on all my karts with maxtorque clutches in ackerman housings, dry, and in margay housings

Kurt, you have PM turned off, and I can't reply. We have only used the old style two-arm clutch innards with the gearbox, and have never broken one. If Jimmy says to use the spring drum, he's the man! Ted

I found a clutch drum in response to my WTB in another forum. Thanks, Ted, for your opinion and for the great photos, past and present, of that cart! Thanks, Tom, for your advice and great conversation the other day. In general, the consensus, in these conversations and others regarding my concerns over the necessity of the dampened drum, must of a worst-case-scenario (high power, high weight, highly aggressive). However, I did find and purchase a fine example of the dampened drum. Hopefully that means my driveline will be beyond bulletproof! Thanks again, guys!
Kurt, my Pop bought that Scorpion through our own Bug dealership in '61. It was one of Bug's first production Scorpions, and both Pop and I didn't like the darn thing. Too heavy, too stiff. My pal, Charlie, was heavy back then, and he was comfortable in the kart. He finally bought it from Pop, and ran it for several years after shortening the wheelbase 4". I bought it back from him in '72 and cleaned it up, had it repainted in epoxy white and installed a 101A/A on that same gearbox with the Max Torque Charlie had used on one of the kart's iterations with an Mc30. He bought it back, and still runs it to this day! It has had the original twin Mc6's, twin PP '82's, a single Mc30, a modified PP '58 hanging off the back of the seat, another Mc30, the BIG modified 820, my 101, a Libberton 610 and now Charlie's 101D! It has seen lots of fun.

That's a cool story Ted. My second race kart was an old bug like that with a MC7 on it. I bought it used back in the day for $150 and made payments on it. Direct drive, great reliable outfit. I ran the heck out of it.
