Hi everyone, I have a mc5 with a clone tillison carb running on gas, and still can,t get it running. very frustrated. It will fire if i give it a shot of either, but  stops right away. Spark seems ok,  the seller says when I bought it, has new rings and seals and gaskets, so I presume compression is ok. I took  the carb apart and was full of fuel, don,t know if thats normal. the reed cage which I think is a small westbend. It has 2 pulse hoes but gasket is cut for only 1 so don,t know if i should make another hole in gasket for the other pulse hole. I realy don,t know what to do. I was hoping to try  my rupp at the big one .thankyou

Mel, check your PRIVATE MESSAGES
The carb only requires one pulse hole. If an engine has spark, compression and fuel, and is timed right, it'll run. Period. If there are air leaks, bad things will happen, but it'll start up before that happens. My take is to find someone who has a REAL Tillotson carb that you know works, and try that. If it runs with a proper carb you can then find out what's eating the clone unit. With so many Tillies floating around out there, there's no reason for a newcomer to be messing with an unproven foreign carb. Ted
im not sure if a stock clone carb will run an mc5 without drilling it ...??

they wont run a good 580 three port ..or Clinton E65 ..without drilling ...just a suggestion ..

get a small flat back they work every time...
Bring it to TBO and we will get it running.
If not, I will loan you a Mac 6.
Look me up!

Yes, having a karting buddy that can swap in known good parts and perhaps even test your parts, is a great way to go.

When running my first 5-Port West Bend V700 at Davis, I couldn't get it to run.

Louie Figone loaned me a carb for the day, and it ran like a top.

As I recall, that was the first time I had met Louie. A great introduction to vintage karting!

Sullivan's your man!
Thanks everyone for being so helpful. If it starts real quick with starting fluid does it mean spark and compression is ok and the carb is screwed up?
Sounds as though. Avoid starting fluid if you can. It washes all the oil off the cylinder walls and bearings. If you can find a known carb, try it out. Terry S. is a great guy to know! Ted
mel,
where are you located state wise?
if you're near ct just cruise over i'll get it running for you.
things you need to check.
the flywheel may be the wrong one i had that happen a time or two
if you're not certain you have the right flywheel you need to time the motor.
which we can walk you through over the forum.

second and more likely sounding to me.
seems you have a fuel flow issue. carbs cvan run sort of when misbuilt but they won't stay running
having messed up many carb installations i have a list of likely suspects.
the motor will start and run sometimes even with the pulse hole covered.
i have a theory why but i won't cover that as it's not helpful.
first
you need to confirm the pulse hole is clear from the start to the finish .

so take out the reed block and make sure both holes are open.
second line up the reed block with the bottom of carb and confirm it lines up to carb pulse hole.
third if you have a two piece manifold make sure the second pulse hole is lining up with the pulse hole all the way to the carb.
then install gaskets being sure not to install wrong and cover the pulse hole.

now connect carb to gas line but be careful not to have any gas in the line.
in the next test we want to confirm that the carb is pumping gas.

after carb is connected to empty line roll over the engine it should then be able to draw gas from the tank to the carb.
with really good carbs it'll do this alone .
if it doesn't cover the carb with you hand preventing air from going in THIS ALWAYS SHOULD DRAW GAS.
if it doesn't theres an internal carb issue.
if it does stop as soon as the gas gets to the carb.
now watch the fuel line for air bubbles.
you shouldn't have any but a couple of tiny ones is ok
an air bubble growing or over a 1/2" long indicates an air leak.

if all this goes well try starting the engine and get back to us with results.

Cool

Dave I do have a long air bubble so maybe air leak. I,am using recoil starter if that makes a difference. Man you guys know so much,I feel like a real rookie. Thankyou
