Ok, if someone please educate me on the L&T clutch for a Mac. I have read where some say not to run them on a mac but don't remember why? Maybe it was on the old forum that's now lost. Is there and issue with this clutch hitting to hard and breaking cranks or is this just hear say?

I ask because Horstman drums and parts are starting to get hard to come by, especially the drums. I would like to make the shift over to a disc clutch but want something that I can get parts for. Any help would be appreciated.
Tom - check with Bill McCornack, I think he sells L&T clutches and parts

And he runs them. Now that we have the 3rd brg support I think crank breakage is not as bad. Some have said that the sudden lockup of the disc clutches causes it but I don't know if that is true or has been proven. Anybody out there know for sure? I am thinking of going to one myself. I am tired of working on Burco's all weekend!
tom, get in touch with steve welte. he'll fill you in on the max torque oil clutches jim doesn't officially make.
the hartman drums are still being rehabbed but a better solution is possibly in the mix. a certain machinist you know well and i were talking about the possibilities of a redesigned drum with replacable gears.

on the disk clutches.
seems the mcculloch cranks get twisted off not broke off but that's hearsay and one old memory from somewhere.
if they are twisting off the third bearing won't help the issue.
Cool
This remark has not that  much to do with the question......

When we realize that a Mac can be made to go really fast and with the right clutch it can hook up, but the results are
the old chainsaw power plant was always under designed for what we want it to do to power our race karts .

It was always a compromise , so just like a small block car engine.....you can make em' fast but they are going to break
sooner then later.......so if you want to run your old Mac fast and hard......have a bunch of them !

If you want to just have fun.......don't push the limits.......but but but.......this is vintage racing......so just where is the point of no return ?

As usual more questions then real answers .

Racing has always been about are you cheating, the rules didn't say anything about what you did to your engine or what new idea you thought up, but sooner then later everyone caught up*.....so evolution of pushing the limits has always been the way.......but  they aren't making new McCulloch two strokes anymore......so expect to pay the price
.....one way or another  .

* Of course sometimes to make the classes fair, the rules spelled out......no cheating.....to win you always found some advantage whether it was skill or whatever it took ......it has never been really fair and what fun would that be ?

Racing after all is just human nature and competition for better or worse.....we all like to think we are a winner....so how hard are you willing to work at it ?

The thing about Vintage Karting is it can be whatever you desire fun or racing........everyone comes out a winner, some just cross the finish line a bit sooner then others !
Dave thanks for the insight. I look forward to seeing what you end up with as a fix for this. I know that trying to find a DXL 9 or 10 tooth drum for #35 chain is getting almost impossible to locate. while at Sandy Hook I ate up the last of my 9 tooth drums for the Hartman clutch also. Needles to say there is a real need here on my end.
